Since 1914, the El Mesias Methodist Church on 406 E Rittenhouse Street has been more than just a place of worship. It has been a symbol of warmth, hospitality, and unwavering faith in the heart of Houston. The story of El Mesias began with a vision – a vision held by a man named Aurelio Arias. Recognizing the growing Latino community in north Houston, Arias felt a calling to establish a haven, a community center and boarding house that would serve as a beacon of hope. As part of his vision, weekly services were held, open to all who resided within its walls. This small act of faith sowed the seeds for what would become a pillar of the community. In 1919, the El Mesias Methodist Church officially found its permanent home, growing in strength and influence over the years. El Mesias’s commitment to the community extended beyond its walls. The church became deeply involved in various outreach programs, including Vacation Bible School, and formed impactful partnerships with organizations like AAMA, the Association for the Advancement of Mexican Americans.
