Why did the Franciscans choose a spot so far from Antigua’s center for El Calvario? Our journey begins in 1618. The Franciscans, central figures in Antigua’s spiritual landscape, sought to recreate Christ’s path to Calvary. They measured 1322 steps from San Francisco el Grande, the symbolic distance between Pilate’s judgment hall and the crucifixion site. This endpoint became El Calvario. Initially marked by a simple wooden cross, El Calvario evolved. A stone cross, still visible today on the front gate, was erected in 1688. The first chapel, built in 1655, succumbed to the devastating earthquake of 1717. The church we see now at El Calvario rose from the ruins in 1720. This wasn’t just a place of worship. It was the culmination of Antigua’s Via Crucis, the Way of the Cross. Imagine the processions during Holy Week, the faithful retracing Christ’s final steps, their journey ending at this very spot, El Calvario. The triple portico of El Calvario’s entrance holds symbolic weight, representing the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The church withstood further tremors in 1773, undergoing repairs in the 18th century and renovations as recently as 1965. El Calvario stands as a testament to Antigua’s enduring faith, a place where history and spirituality intertwine. As you stand before El Calvario, remember its origins. It is not just a church. It is the endpoint of a sacred journey, a symbol of both suffering and resilience.
