A small boy stands poised, seemingly etching words onto a giant sphere. This is El Buzón de Palabras, a captivating sculpture nestled in Plaza de Carabanchel. El Buzón de Palabras was installed in 2005. It’s a tribute to tolerance and equality. The boy appears to be transcribing passages from Michael Ende’s “The Neverending Story” onto the sphere. The sculptor, Lucía Antonini, won a competition held by the city council and the San Fernando Faculty of Fine Arts to create this piece. El Buzón de Palabras stands in front of the former town hall of Carabanchel. This spot, now home to the district’s municipal council, adds another layer of significance to the artwork. The sculpture is made of patinated bronze. The boy is life-sized, while the sphere is an imposing two meters in diameter. As you circle El Buzón de Palabras, the boy’s perspective shifts. The words he writes, though from a children’s fantasy novel, speak to universal themes. They remind us of the power of words and the importance of understanding and acceptance. El Buzón de Palabras is more than just a statue. It is a symbol of hope, communication, and the enduring power of stories.
