El Bethel Baptist Church

In 1962, a beacon of faith was ignited in Houston’s Sunnyside area. El Bethel Baptist Church, originally known as Willing Workers Baptist Church, began its journey under the leadership of a remarkable man, Reverend Rugley Monroe Jr. El Bethel Baptist Church quickly became a cornerstone of the community. A young, 30-year-old Reverend Monroe formed a youth group, guiding many towards their faith. His dedication extended beyond the church walls. He worked with city officials on neighborhood improvement programs, advocating for the Sunnyside community. Reverend Monroe’s commitment to education is evident in his own journey. He pursued theological studies at Bishop College and Durham Business College. In 1974, he received a Doctor of Divinity Degree from South Union Theological Seminary. He also participated in continuing education programs at Prairie View College. El Bethel Baptist Church has witnessed Reverend Monroe’s leadership for an incredible 55 years. During this time, he has ordained numerous preachers, some of whom have gone on to lead their own congregations. He also served as the president of the Southside Ministers Union in 1998. His influence has been recognized by city officials, including former mayors and representatives, who have acknowledged his positive impact on society. El Bethel Baptist Church has been more than just a place of worship. It’s been a center for community development, spiritual growth, and unwavering leadership under Reverend Monroe.
