What if I told you this seemingly serene statue, El Ángel, has a history as dramatic as a telenovela? El Ángel, a tribute to the independence of Nuevo León, stands proudly. Yet, its journey hasn’t been without its bumps, literally. Inaugurated incomplete, it initially lacked its iconic independence figure. The base of El Ángel tells a story in itself. Four plaques mark its sides. One honors Nuevo León’s first governor, José Antonio Rodríguez. Another commemorates decree 45, granting Nuevo León statehood. A third speaks of the first congress of the free and sovereign state of Nuevo León. The fourth recognizes the monument’s donors, a community of Nuevo León natives residing in San Antonio, Texas. El Ángel faced a near-disaster on November 6, 1989. The angel sculpture plummeted, held precariously by a small metal structure. Damaged but not destroyed, it was rushed to architect Alfredo Saldaña’s workshop in San Nicolás de los Garza. It suffered a hole in the head, a lost hand, and damage to its base and feet. Following its restoration, El Ángel returned, perhaps a bit more grounded than before. In 1995, a proposal emerged to move El Ángel to Macroplaza. This was to celebrate the 170th anniversary of Nuevo León’s political constitution. However, historian Israel Cavazos opposed the relocation, ensuring El Ángel remained in its original location. So, as you admire El Ángel, remember its tumultuous past. It symbolizes not just independence but resilience, a testament to the enduring spirit of Nuevo León.
