A single minaret pierces the sky. This is the Ek Minar Masjid in Raichur Karnataka. Its solitary tower stands as a testament to history. It’s a unique mosque. It stands out from other mosques with its single minaret.

The Ek Minar Masjid a state-protected monument boasts a rich history. Malik Ambar the Peshwa of the Ahmadnagar Sultanate commissioned it. This was in 1513 or 1514. The Persian inscription on its threshold confirms this. He built this mosque during the reign of Mahmud Shah Bahmani.

The mosque’s name Ek Minar Masjid literally means One Minaret Mosque. This reflects its most striking feature. Unlike many mosques with symmetrical minarets this one stands alone. Stand-alone minarets like the Qutb Minar and Chand Minar often served as victory towers. The Ek Minar Masjid’s single minaret breaks this norm. It’s an exception.

The architecture is captivating. A courtyard with two graves sits before the mosque. A water cistern lies at the courtyard’s head. Eight Chalukyan pillars support the entrance roof. The prayer hall is rectangular. It measures about 12.2 by 9.1 meters. A flat ceiling covers the hall. A battlement parapet rises above the roof. Quranic verses and hadith adorn the western wall. These are inscribed on stone slabs.

The minaret itself is exceptional. It’s approximately 20 meters high. Its diameter is around 4 meters. The style is Persian. It’s remarkably similar to the Chand Minar. It’s also similar to the minarets of the Mahmud Gawan Madrasa. Both are earlier Bahmani constructions.

The minaret has two stories. Each has windows for light and air. Galleries with stone balustrades surround them. A winding staircase leads to the top story. The minaret tapers gracefully. A rounded Bahmani dome surmounts it. Floral decorations grace its base. A pinnacle topped with a crescent crowns the dome.

Sadly some historical structures around the mosque were demolished in 2016. This was to widen an adjacent road. The Ek Minar Masjid however remains. It continues to stand strong. It endures as a symbol of history and faith. This single minaret a symbol of perseverance. It’s a must-see monument. The Ek Minar Masjid whispers tales of centuries past. Let’s continue our journey.
