Before you stands the Eiszeit-Haus a treasure trove of Flensburg’s geological past. This unassuming building in Christiansenpark holds a remarkable history. It wasn’t always a museum. Around 1820 it served a much humbler purpose. It was a stable housing horses. Imagine the sound of hooves the smell of hay. The old well in the cellar still whispers tales of those days.

The Eiszeit-Haus’s transformation began with the collection of Hans Philippsen a Flensburg teacher. His passion for geology and paleontology amassed a significant collection. This formed the foundation of the museum. His dedication laid the groundwork for the Eiszeit-Haus we see today.

Then in 2002 thanks to the initiative of Mayor Hermann Stell the building was renovated. It was transformed into the Schaumagazin a show magazine of the Naturwissenschaftliches Museum. The Eiszeit-Haus officially opened its doors on August 2nd 2002.

Today the Eiszeit-Haus showcases more than just local fossils. It presents a comprehensive view of regional fauna flora geology and paleontology. You’ll find exhibits spanning the Cambrian period to the Quaternary. The museum also features a significant collection of crystalline erratic blocks. These stones travelled immense distances carried by glaciers during the ice age. Some of these are incredibly old even dating back 1.7 billion years.

Many of these fossils and stones were collected by local enthusiasts. Names like Walther Emeis Lowe Paulus Paulsen and Alfred Zachau are synonymous with the museum’s rich collections. These are supplemented by items on loan from private collectors. Even today volunteers contribute significantly to the Eiszeit-Haus’s success.

But the Eiszeit-Haus is more than just a static collection. It hosts regular events. There are guided walks through the Christiansenpark. You’ll find fossil identification days for both kids and adults. Seasonal events like bat evenings allow for exciting nature experiences. The Eiszeit-Haus actively engages with the community through educational programs and workshops.

So take your time to explore the Eiszeit-Haus. Let this humble building transport you through millions of years. Uncover the stories frozen within the stones. You’ll understand the geological history of the area. The Ice Age and its impact on Flensburg’s landscape will become clear. The Eiszeit-Haus is more than a museum it is a journey through time.
