Threatened by the Lech’s powerful current, the Eisenbahnerwehr stands as a testament to human ingenuity. The Lech threatened to undermine the essential railway bridge. Around 1840, a six-meter-high weir emerged from the rushing waters of the Lech. The Eisenbahnerwehr was born, a bulwark against the river’s erosive power. This intervention, however, created a barrier for migrating fish. The Eisenbahnerwehr’s impact on the river’s ecosystem was recognized. In 2006, a bypass channel was constructed, offering a route for aquatic life around the weir. This “fish pass,” flowing with 500 liters of Lech water per second, was created alongside a new power plant within the weir itself. The Eisenbahnerwehr now generates approximately 12 million kilowatt-hours annually. This provides enough clean energy for over 4,000 households. This power is generated without the emission of carbon dioxide or other harmful pollutants. The Eisenbahnerwehr embodies the harmonious coexistence of ecology and economy.
