In the heart of Frankfurt (Oder), a silent sentinel stands watch. The Eisenbahner-Gefallenen-Denkmal, a memorial to railway workers lost in war, whispers stories of sacrifice and resilience. The Eisenbahner-Gefallenen-Denkmal was dedicated in 1932. It honors railway workers from the former districts of Bromberg, Posen, and Danzig who fell during World War I and the border conflicts of 1919. The memorial’s three towering stelae represent these three districts. The base symbolizes the Reichsbahndirektion Osten, the railway division they all belonged to. A winged wheel crowns the monument, a symbol of the shared work and camaraderie of these railwaymen. The monument is not dedicated to any particular military unit or regiment. It specifically honors the civilian railway workers who were conscripted into service. The Eisenbahner-Gefallenen-Denkmal was a community effort. Funds were raised over ten years by railway associations in the eastern district. The brothers Fürstenberg, stonemasons and sculptors, brought the vision to life. Reichsbahnrat W. Bering served as the architect. The soaring design was intentional, meant to complement the surrounding housing development and emphasize the hilltop location. The monument is built from Kirchhainer Muschelkalk limestone. The winged wheel at the top is bronze. Originally, inscriptions on the narrow sides explained the monument’s significance. Sadly, these inscriptions are no longer legible. The adjacent viewing terrace, with its circular seating arrangement, was also part of the original design. The Eisenbahner-Gefallenen-Denkmal has faced challenging times. After World War II, the Soviet troops occupied the surrounding housing, converting the area into a hotel and officer quarters. The memorial itself fell into neglect. Its inscriptions were removed under Allied Control Council Directive No. 30. Following the withdrawal of Soviet troops, the housing was privatized and restored in 2000. The memorial was also cleaned, but unfortunately, harsh cleaning agents caused further damage. Efforts to restore the inscriptions began in 2015, when an application was submitted to the Denkmalbehörde (the historic preservation authority). The Eisenbahner-Gefallenen-Denkmal stands as a poignant reminder of the impact of war on ordinary lives. It serves as a testament to the dedication of the railway workers and the enduring spirit of those who strive to preserve their memory.
