“Do not be afraid there are twenty of you but you are worth one thousand.” Imagine those words echoing through the hearts of knights. We’re standing before Eira dos Mouros. It is more than just a viewpoint. It is a testament to centuries of clashing cultures and enduring beauty.

Eira dos Mouros whispers tales of Moorish occupation. It reminds us of Christian reconquest and romantic revival. This castle dates back to the early 8th century. The Moors strategically built it on one of Sintra’s highest peaks. The impressive granite outcrop provided a natural defense to the north.

The Moorish Castle served as a vital lookout. It helped to manage maritime access to Lisbon. Its double-belted walls with battlements tell a story of sieges and defense. Inside, ruins of cereal storage, stables, and a cistern whisper of daily life within these walls.

Legend says that after Afonso Henriques conquered Santarém, he laid siege to Lisbon. Fearing a surprise attack by the Sintra Moors, he sent Don Gil and twenty trusted men to observe the enemy. They were tasked with preventing the Lisbon Moors from heading up the River Tagus into Sintra. Somewhere between Colares and Penedo, the Virgin Mary appeared to them. She reassured them of their strength. Inspired, they defeated the enemy and conquered the Moorish Castle. In Colares, the Chapel of Our Lady of Milides was erected to honor this victory.

Centuries passed and the Moorish Castle fell into disrepair. Trees and bushes overtook its walls. Shepherds and cattle became the unlikely guardians of the old fortress. But the 19th century brought a change. The arrival of Romantic Aesthetics sparked a renewed appreciation for the Moorish Castle.

King Ferdinand II recognized its importance. He instructed Baron von Eschewege to restore the walls and towers. The king wanted to bring back the Moorish Castle’s silhouette to Sintra. He ordered the surrounding area to be forested. Today, we are left breathless by the green, brown, orange, and yellow hues of the leaves.

Since 1976, extensive excavations have revealed insights into the castle’s history. The uncovered artifacts show the Islamic influence between the 10th and 12th centuries. Baking dishes, bowls, jugs and weaving instruments were found.

Consider the Door of Betrayal. It is hidden in the most uneven part of the castle. During conflicts, it provided discreet access to the outside world or a means of escape.

The Castle Keep was a small stronghold. Local authorities lived there. It was visible from the Atlantic Ocean.

Today, as we stand here at Eira dos Mouros, take a moment. Imagine the lives lived within these walls. The battles fought and the beauty rediscovered. Feel the weight of history and the serenity of the landscape. The Moorish Castle is a reminder of Sintra’s captivating blend of nature and history.
