1894. A pivotal year for Eimsbüttel. That’s when this vibrant district, once a quaint village outside Hamburg’s walls, officially became part of the bustling city. Eimsbüttel, first mentioned in 1275 as “Eymersbuttele,” transitioned from a small collection of farmsteads to a bustling hub. Imagine the transformation. This area, once characterized by three main farms and four smaller cottages, expanded rapidly, its population exploding from just over 52,000 in 1895 to nearly 125,000 by 1925. Eimsbüttel’s growth was fueled by the construction of the Speicherstadt, which displaced many residents from Hamburg’s old town. They found new homes in the rapidly developing Eimsbüttel. This influx of people led to a construction boom of Mietshäuser, apartment buildings designed to accommodate the growing population. Eimsbüttel also became a hub for industry. The company Beiersdorf, known for brands like Nivea and Labello, moved its operations here in 1892. They needed space to expand their production of skincare and beauty products. This further contributed to the district’s economic and population growth. Amidst this urban development, Eimsbüttel retained its green spaces. The Eimsbütteler Park, originally a private garden created by Ascan Lutteroth in 1832, became a public space. Other parks like Wehbers Park and Unnapark offered residents respites from the bustling city life. Eimsbüttel even boasts Hamburg’s oldest swimming pool, the Kaifu-Bad, opened in 1936 as the city’s first heated outdoor pool. From its humble beginnings as a small village, Eimsbüttel transformed into a dynamic district. It offers a mix of urban living, green spaces, and historical charm. The district even played a role in shaping German hip-hop music, with bands like the Beginner and rapper Samy Deluxe emerging from Eimsbüttel. This district truly captures the spirit of Hamburg, blending tradition with modernity.
