Was Eilbek always a bustling part of Hamburg? No. Picture this small village on the outskirts centuries ago. It was known as Ylenbeke first mentioned in 1247. The name itself is a mystery. The Second World War brought immense destruction. Heavy air raids in July 1943 almost completely destroyed Eilbek. The Hospital to the Holy Spirit and the Marien-Magdalenen-Kloster were among the buildings lost. Eilbek was devastated. Yet even in this devastation the spirit of this unique place survived.
Post-war reconstruction shaped Eilbek. Multi-story apartment buildings replaced the war ruins. Some Gründerzeit buildings and pre-war factories remain. Interestingly many high bunkers from the war were cleverly converted into homes. Eilbek is a blend of old and new. A testament to resilience.
