Haven’t you spotted the little fellow yet? The Eichhörnchen Statue here in Heidelberg might be small but holds a tale as captivating as the city itself.

This statue isn’t just another pretty face. The Eichhörnchen Statue represents a reminder to look back. According to legend, the bronze monkey on Heidelberg’s Old Bridge encourages reflection. It urges everyone crossing the bridge to remember where they came from. It served as a reminder that whether inside or outside the city, no one is superior.

While we are talking about reminders. The current Eichhörnchen Statue dates only back to 1979. However, a monkey figure has stood on the bridge since the 15th century. An earlier version even clutched its butt while holding a mirror. That earlier statue disappeared during the Palatinate War of Succession from 1689 to 1693.

Professor Gernot Rumpf sculpted the current bronze Eichhörnchen Statue. Its free hand forms the mano cornuta. This horned-hand gesture wards off the evil eye. The statue’s head is hollow with eye holes. Now, visitors often use it as a mask for selfies.

Locals say the Eichhörnchen Statue brings good luck. Rubbing the mirror supposedly brings wealth. Rubbing its fingers guarantees a return to Heidelberg. Don’t forget the little bronze mice nearby. Rubbing them is said to bring fertility.

A plaque below the Eichhörnchen Statue features a poem. Baroque writer Martin Zeiler penned it in 1632. The poem translates to: “Why are you staring at me? Haven’t you seen the old monkey of Heidelberg? Look to and fro. There you will find many more of my own kind.”

The poem playfully teases those who stare. Placing your head in the monkey’s mask offers participation. You become the monkey. For a moment, you survey the tourists. You judge their curious eyes.

So next time you’re here at the Eichhörnchen Statue take a moment. Embrace the playful spirit and folklore. This statue, small as it may be invites you to reflect remember and perhaps even find a bit of luck.
