Whispers of history surround the Ehrenmal Kürassierregiment War memorial. Here, on the green expanse near the Aegidiitor, stands a tribute to the fallen soldiers of the Westfälisches Kürassier-Regiment Nr. 4 von Driesen. The Ehrenmal Kürassierregiment isn’t the first memorial to stand on this site. Two previous memorials preceded it, the first erected in 1924 and the second in 1930. Both stood nearby on the Neuplatz. The current Ehrenmal Kürassierregiment, dedicated in 1964, bears a striking resemblance to the 1930 monument. Designed by Bernhard Graf von Plettenberg, it evokes the spirit of its predecessor. Three distinct panels narrate the regiment’s story. The right panel depicts a patrol scene: a cuirassier on horseback alongside a soldier studying the landscape with binoculars. The central panel portrays a mounted cuirassier at a graveside, a somber reminder of the war’s cost. The left panel presents a dynamic image of cuirassiers engaged in tank combat in the Champagne region of France in 1918. Flanking these panels are plaques inscribed with the names of the regiment’s soldiers who perished between 1914 and 1920. The Ehrenmal Kürassierregiment memorial stands as a testament to the 4th Westfälisches Kürassier-Regiment von Driesen, a unit with a history stretching from 1717 to 1919. The regiment, originally dragoons, saw action in conflicts spanning centuries: the Silesian Wars, the Seven Years’ War, and the Wars of German Unification. Stationed in Münster’s Reiterkaserne on Steinfurter Straße, they participated in World War I, deploying to Poland, Russia, and France. The regiment suffered significant losses, with 209 soldiers making the ultimate sacrifice. In 1918, the regiment played a role in suppressing the Spartacist Uprising in Berlin before returning to Münster in 1919. Their journey concluded with their incorporation into the Reichswehr. The Ehrenmal Kürassierregiment serves as a poignant reminder of their service and sacrifice.
