Did you ever hear of Ernst Barlach? He carved grief into stone. At the Hamburger Ehrenmal, his “Mourning Mother with Child” embodies the sorrow of war. The Ehrendenkmal, also known as Denkmal für die Gefallenen beider Weltkriege, stands as a stark reminder of the human cost of conflict. Originally built to commemorate the fallen soldiers of World War I, it now honors those lost in both World Wars. The Ehrendenkmal was designed by architect Klaus Hoffmann. The memorial’s minimalist design, a 21-meter high concrete stele, sets it apart from other, more ornate war memorials. Its simplicity emphasizes reflection over glorification. Barlach’s relief on the front depicts a mother cradling her child, a universal symbol of loss and sorrow. On the reverse side, an inscription remembers the 40,000 sons of Hamburg who died in World War I. During the Nazi era, Barlach’s relief, considered “degenerate art,” was replaced with a phoenix. This phoenix symbolized the Nazi ideology. After the war, the original relief was painstakingly reconstructed. The Ehrendenkmal was rededicated to honor the victims of both wars. Today, the Ehrendenkmal stands near the Alsterarkaden, close to the Rathausmarkt. It’s a place of quiet contemplation in a bustling city. The Ehrendenkmal serves as a potent reminder of the past and a symbol of Hamburg’s resilience. It stands as a testament to the power of art to express profound emotions and the importance of remembrance.
