Once upon a time, in the heart of Düsseldorf, stood the Goldener-Dotz-Brunnen. It was more than just a fountain. It was a shimmering beacon of artistry. This unique sculpture, crafted in 1971 by the Munich-born artist Blasius Spreng, was originally designed as a dynamic fountain. The ehemals Goldener-Dotz-Brunnen was a mesmerizing spectacle. Spreng, known for his intricate, large-scale works like the Mainz Fastnachtsbrunnen, had a knack for combining small elements into a grand, cohesive whole. The ehemals Goldener-Dotz-Brunnen, located at the corner of Gartenstraße and Kaiserstraße, was a prime example of this. He began with a central cube. From this core, he extended multi-faceted cuboid elements of varying sizes, creating a three-dimensional, abstract “spurt”. This culminated in a golden sphere, the “Dotz,” which gave the fountain its name. Sadly, time and circumstance have not been kind to the ehemals Goldener-Dotz-Brunnen. Both the golden sphere and the surrounding basin have disappeared, leaving behind the bronze and brass sculpture now known simply as “MultiCubus.” Though altered, the core of Spreng’s vision remains. The ehemals Goldener-Dotz-Brunnen continues to spark curiosity and invite contemplation. It stands as a testament to the ever-changing nature of art and urban landscapes.
