“One mile from Berlin” The words etched into the iron plaque are a whisper from the past. This is the ehemalige Null-Meilensäule. Or rather its current iteration. A replica standing proudly where once stood the original.
This elegant milestone a decorative example of a ball-milestone in the Roman style marks a crucial point in Berlin’s history. It is more than just a pretty sculpture. For centuries this or a similar marker stood as the starting point for measuring distances across Prussia. Every other milestone radiating outwards from Berlin declared its distance from this very spot.
The story of this particular milestone is one of movement. Its first appearance is shrouded in some mystery. Some link it to the construction of the road between the Brandenburg Gate and Charlottenburg Palace in 1798. Others dispute this date citing an 1800 survey that makes no mention of it. What we do know is that the current version with its gilded ball and spire reflects the Classical style. This suggests a later date possibly 1842 when it’s believed architect Friedrich August Stüler designed it. That year King Friedrich Wilhelm IV introduced a new helmet for the Prussian army. It featured a metal spike mirroring the milestone’s crown a coincidence or a deliberate echo?
The milestone’s journey wasn’t a straight path. It was moved during the introduction of the metric system around 1868-1869. Converted into a kilometer marker it was relocated near the old Ruhleben Palace. Its original inscription was removed. However Emperor Wilhelm I missed the distinctive landmark. He ordered its return to the Luisenplatz in 1875. The plaque with “One mile from Berlin” was added during this time.
It wasn’t done moving yet. Around 1905 it was shifted to its present location possibly due to the construction of a monument for Kaiser Friedrich III or a road widening project. Today it stands in the shadow of a building and trees. The lack of sunlight and dampness lead to algae growth darkening the stone. It is a testament to Berlin’s evolving cityscape. A reminder of the constant shifting and reshaping of the city’s urban fabric. A story embedded in stone. A silent witness to centuries of change. This seemingly simple milestone holds a wealth of history. It speaks of kings and emperors of changing measurements and unwavering memories. It is a symbol of perseverance resilience and the enduring allure of Berlin.
