“A coal mine named after a prince?” a young boy asked his father, pointing towards the towering Malakow-Turm of Ehem. Zeche Fürst Hardenberg. “Indeed,” his father replied, “Prince Karl August von Hardenberg, a Prussian statesman.” Ehem. Zeche Fürst Hardenberg stands as a testament to Dortmund’s rich mining history. Established in 1872, the colliery, also known as Zeche Vereinigte Fürst Hardenberg, bore the prince’s name. Its story is one of both triumph and tragedy. In 1873, a devastating accident claimed the lives of eight miners during the sinking of the first shaft. Yet, the mine persevered. Coal production began in 1876, and the mine steadily expanded. In 1881, Fürst Hardenberg merged with the neighboring Zeche Minister Stein, forming Vereinigte Stein & Hardenberg, under the ownership of the Gelsenkirchener Bergwerks-AG. This union brought growth, and by 1950, Fürst Hardenberg reached its peak, producing nearly a million tons of coal with over 3,000 employees. However, the mine’s fate was sealed. In 1960, Fürst Hardenberg ceased production, absorbed by Zeche Minister Stein. Though silent now, the remaining structures, including the iconic Malakow-Turm, whisper stories of Dortmund’s industrial past, a stark reminder of the men who toiled beneath the earth. The site has been transformed into the Logistikpark Fürst Hardenberg, a modern hub built on the foundations of a bygone era. The legacy of Ehem. Zeche Fürst Hardenberg lives on, a tribute to the industry that shaped Dortmund.
