Whispers of faith and history linger around the Franziskanerkloster Dortmund. Founded in 1895, the Franziskanerkloster Dortmund stands as a testament to the enduring presence of the Franciscan order in this city.

Initially established in Dortmund’s eastern city center, the brothers of the Franziskanerkloster Dortmund began their pastoral work in 1911. This dedication led to the monastery’s elevation to the Parish of St. Franziskus and Antonius in 1954. Today, around 5,300 faithful call this parish home.

Many people revered Brother Jordan Mai as a saint. He died in Dortmund on February 20, 1922. His remains were moved to the church in 1950. Since 2004, the Franziskaner Mission, a key mission of the German Franciscan Province, has been based here at the Franziskanerkloster Dortmund. Additionally, the Bruder-Jordan-Haus, a senior citizens’ center, has been located next door since summer 2006.

The Franziskanerkloster Dortmund focuses on parish work. It also is home to the Franziskaner Mission and the Bruder-Jordan-Werk. They are committed to helping the homeless and providing hospice care.

The Portiuncula Circle meets here on the first Friday of each month. This group follows the paths of St. Francis and St. Clare.

The history of the Franciscan order in Dortmund goes back further. Records show an initial founding between 1283 and 1287. Street names like Brüderweg, Mönchgang, and Klosterstraße mark its earlier location. It was near the northeastern city wall. The Franziskanerkloster was dissolved in 1805 during the Napoleonic secularization. The Franziskanerkloster returned to Dortmund in 1895. A suitable site was found for a new church at the edge of the Kaiserstraßenviertel. Johann Franz Klomp designed the three-aisled basilica in the neo-Gothic style. It was built in 1901/02.

Each year brings anniversaries tied to the life of St. Francis. Celebrations included “800 Years of the Confirmation of the Order’s Rule” and “800 Years of Christmas Celebration in Greccio.” This celebration led to the creation of Christmas cribs. In another year, people celebrated “800 Years of Receiving the Wounds of Jesus by St. Francis.” “800 Years of Sun Song” was celebrated the following year.

Today, the Franziskanerkloster Dortmund continues its work. It offers a place of worship, community, and service to those in need. As you stand here, consider the countless lives touched by this monastery. Its legacy is one of faith, compassion, and dedication to the spirit of St. Francis.
