The Diesterweg-Gymnasium’s story began in 1895. It started as the 9th Realschule. In 1905, the 14th Realschule was founded. This later became the Diesterweg-Realschule in 1920. This school is considered the origin of today’s Diesterweg-Gymnasium. In 1938, the Werner-von-Siemens-Realschule was renamed Gontard-Oberschule for boys.

Both schools suffered damage during World War II. They were temporarily relocated to different areas. After the war, they were merged as the Diesterweg-Gymnasium. The school first occupied a building in Badstraße. A decade later, it moved to Böttgerstraße.

In 2001, the Ranke-Schule joined the Diesterweg-Gymnasium. The school then moved to Putbusser Straße. This building was known for its striking orange color. In 2011, the Diesterweg-Gymnasium returned to its renovated location on Böttgerstraße. The building on the corner of Pankstraße and Böttgerstraße was designed by Ludwig Hoffmann.

Today, the Diesterweg-Gymnasium is a comprehensive school. It serves students from grades 5 to 12. The Diesterweg-Gymnasium is known for its intercultural profile. Students from 30 nations attend the school. Intercultural learning is integrated into the curriculum. The school emphasizes equality and integration.

The Diesterweg-Gymnasium offers a wide range of activities. There are art projects and sports programs. Students can participate in unusual sports like billiards. The school has a strong focus on languages. Since 2021, students can study French, Latin, and English. The school also has a bilingual French class.

The Diesterweg-Gymnasium offers many after-school activities. These include music, art, and sports clubs. Students can join a theater group or a graffiti art club. The school also provides support for career orientation.

The Diesterweg-Gymnasium faced a conflict over a prayer room. In 2007, a Muslim student was prohibited from praying. The case went to court. The final decision restricted prayer to maintain school peace. The Diesterweg-Gymnasium promotes intercultural understanding through workshops.
