Ready to explore a village with a rich history? That’s Egstedt. This part of Erfurt lies 8 km south of the city center. Egstedt’s story stretches back to ancient times. Stone axes and hammers found here prove early settlements. A Bronze Age ax and Celt also mark this area.
Egstedt once sat on a key trade route. It linked Erfurt to the south near Stadtilm. The village’s fate was always tied to Erfurt. Egstedt was part of Erfurt’s municipal area. When wars struck, like the Thirty Years’ War, locals sought safety behind Erfurt’s walls.
Around the church St. Michael, a fascinating theory exists. It suggests a pre-Christian Germanic cult site once stood here. Later, in 1711, the Trinitatis Church was rebuilt. It then became the Evangelical Church. The lower part of the tower is from older times. The Ulrich brothers of Apolda crafted its two bells.
Inside the church, discover treasures. There is an old sandstone baptismal font. Also a baptismal stand dates to the church’s rebuilding. The Volckland organ on the upper gallery is truly special. It’s largely untouched but needs much restoration. Since 1980, it has been unplayable.
Egstedt faced hard times during wartime. After World War II, Egstedt took in many refugees. By late 1946, 200 newcomers called it home. Today, you can see many stately farms. These farms have restored half-timbered buildings, especially in the village center.
Egstedt has a unique symbol. Its coat of arms features an Egge, a harrow. This represents the village’s name and farming ties. A silver six-spoked wheel on red shows its link to Erfurt. It also marks the historic trade route. The black cross stands for the local church. It hints at a reconciliation cross nearby.
Since 1990, Egstedt has partnered with Heidesheim am Rhein. But the church connection started in 1975. Egstedt sits on the road from Erfurt to Stadtilm, dating back to 1837. A wide bike path to Erfurt was built in 2011.
