Gazing upon Église Sainte-Camille, one can almost hear the clatter of machinery. This wasn’t always a sanctuary. It began life in 1870 as a flax-beating workshop for the Feron-Vrau company. The industrial boom of the 19th century brought a surge in population to the Sainte-Hélène district of Saint-André-lez-Lille. The area needed a church. Camille Feron-Vrau, a doctor, devout Catholic, and philanthropic entrepreneur, saw a solution in his own factory. In a gesture of remarkable generosity, he donated the workshop and surrounding land to the Diocese of Lille in 1901. The conversion was swift. By 1908, the former workshop held its first service as Église Sainte-Camille, named in his honor. The street alongside even took the name of his relative, Philibert Vrau. This initial structure was intended to be temporary. A grander church was planned. However, plans changed. Instead of demolition, the church was enlarged and renovated in 1929. The metal framework was clad in slate, a bell tower was added, and the interior was transformed. A plaque commemorating parishioners lost in war found a place near the entrance. Église Sainte-Camille served the community faithfully for over fifty years. But time, as it often does, took its toll. By the late 1970s, cracks appeared in the structure. Concerns grew. By 2005, these concerns became critical. Église Sainte-Camille was closed for safety reasons. Sadly, the cost of repairs proved prohibitive. After various unsuccessful attempts at rehabilitation, the difficult decision was made to sell. In 2021, Église Sainte-Camille passed into the hands of a property developer. While no longer a place of worship, its story continues, woven into the fabric of Saint-André-lez-Lille.
