How about a story about a church that rose from a desire to distinguish itself? We are standing before the Église Saint-Viateur d’Outremont. This Roman Catholic church stands proudly in Montreal’s Outremont borough. Its story began in 1911 after the Eucharistic Congress of Montreal in 1910.

The Église Saint-Viateur d’Outremont marked Outremont’s separation from Saint-Louis du Mile-End parish. Imagine the pride and excitement of a community forging its own path. Louis-Zéphirin Gauthier and Joseph-Égilde-Césaire Daoust were the architects. They chose the Gothic Revival style and its slender arches for the Église Saint-Viateur d’Outremont.

Guido Nincheri decorated the church. He also designed the windows. Nincheri’s signature is visible in the stained glass. The blessing ceremony for the Église Saint-Viateur d’Outremont took place on October 26, 1913.

Originally, the woodwork was oak, created by Philibert Lemay. Plaster statues adorned the church. In 1950, sculptor Médard Bourgault replaced them with wooden statues. These wooden statues are now a main attraction.

The Église Saint-Viateur d’Outremont boasts a Casavant Frères organ built in 1913. Its restoration happened in the early 1990s. The Église Saint-Viateur d’Outremont stands as a testament to architectural vision and artistic collaboration. It embodies the spirit of a community seeking its own identity. Take a moment to admire the Église Saint-Viateur d’Outremont. Consider the dedication of those who brought this sacred space to life.
