A majestic chandelier hangs in the Église Saint-Roch. It didn’t always belong here. This magnificent crystal fixture once illuminated the grandeur of the Casino de la Jetée-Promenade. After that building’s destruction it found a new home. A generous parishioner purchased it at auction. The city then gifted it to the Église Saint-Roch.
The Église Saint-Roch stands before you. A testament to Nice’s rich history. Its construction began in 1788. It was completed in 1790. The church’s unique design reflects an interesting blend of influences. Its original square shape hints at Eastern inspiration. This was due to Nice’s dependence on Sardinia at the time. Later renovations gave it a more traditional French church form.
Long before this magnificent structure existed there was a smaller chapel. Built in 1660 by master mason Joseph Pisano. It was dedicated to Saint Roch the patron saint of plague victims. This was after a devastating plague outbreak in 1631. The original chapel proved insufficient as the neighborhood grew. The current church arose from the need for a larger place of worship.
The Église Saint-Roch is more than just stones and frescoes. It’s a powerful reminder of Nice’s resilience. The church even survived a bombing in 1944 during World War II. This was when an American air raid targeted nearby railway lines. Subsequent restorations in 1989 restored the church to its former glory.
Examine the church’s exterior. Note the trompe-l’œil facade. This painted illusion was meticulously recreated using old documents. It adds a captivating layer to the church’s appearance. The stunning polychrome tiled cupola atop its bell tower is particularly notable. It adds to the church’s unique aesthetic.
Inside you will see stunning features. There is a 700-kilo white marble statue of Mary. A polychrome wooden statue of Saint Roch accompanies his faithful canine companion. These statues likely originated from the earlier 1660 chapel. They add to the church’s rich artistic heritage.
