Amidst the vibrant tapestry of Montreal, the Église Saint-René-Goupil stands as a testament to modern religious architecture. This Catholic church, nestled within the heart of the city, holds a captivating story waiting to be unveiled. Église Saint-René-Goupil’s tale begins in 1959. Cardinal Paul-Émile Léger established the parish on February 23rd. The land for the church was acquired the following year. Before the completion of the church, masses were held in unconventional locations. During the week, the basement of a house served as a makeshift sanctuary. On Sundays, the faithful gathered in local school halls, creating a sense of community amidst the anticipation. The Église Saint-René-Goupil was constructed between 1963 and 1964. The presbytery is integrated within the same building, a testament to efficient design. Architects Roger D’Astous and Jean-Paul Pothier, a formidable duo, brought the vision to life. D’Astous, known for his distinctive style, played a pivotal role in shaping the church’s unique character. The Église Saint-René-Goupil distinguishes itself with its rectangular design and unusual materials. It’s the only church by D’Astous featuring cork and red brick, a choice driven by budgetary constraints and artistic vision. This combination creates a striking visual effect. The cork and dark wood contribute to the nave’s subdued lighting. This contrasts sharply with the brightly lit choir, accentuated by a white band on the wall behind the altar. The Église Saint-René-Goupil also features a unique transition zone between the street and the sanctuary. A large concrete screen conceals the entrance, requiring worshippers to turn at a right angle to enter. This design, initially opposed by the Diocesan Liturgical Commission, was championed by D’Astous as essential for creating a contemplative space. The church’s interior boasts craftsmanship. Henri Boisvert crafted the pews. Desmarais et Robitaille, renowned metal artisans, created the wrought iron elements, adding a touch of elegance to the sacred space. Around 1990, the community hall in the basement was repurposed as a thrift store. Later renovations saw the baptistery transformed into a chapel and the rear gallery divided to create a community room. The Église Saint-René-Goupil continues to serve as a spiritual and community hub, its story woven into the fabric of Montreal’s rich history.
