“Can a church be reborn?” I ask you as we stand before the Église Saint-Rédempteur. This is not just any church. It’s a story of resilience and reinvention. The Église Saint-Rédempteur stands as a testament to faith. It also shows the ever-changing landscape of community needs.

Let’s delve into the history of this sacred place. The original Église Saint-Rédempteur was built in 1881-1884. Paul Destombes designed it. He was also the architect behind the Visitation convent in Roubaix. The church was named Église du Très-Saint-Rédempteur.

Imagine the grand interior. It had three naves in a classical baroque style. A marble master altar stood in the choir beneath a cupola. The pulpit was particularly striking. It featured a large sounding board and a stone staircase. Statues adorned its balustrade. Organs from Paul Schyven were installed in 1897. The bell tower was finished in 1898.

During World War II, disaster struck. British bombings hit the Pile district hard. About forty bombs fell. The church’s bell tower and portal were damaged. Vitraux shattered into pieces. The raid caused thirty-eight deaths and fifty-six injuries. Repairs weren’t completed until 1947.

The late 20th century brought new challenges. Catholic practice declined. New populations arrived. The church suffered. The municipality of Roubaix and the diocese lacked funds for upkeep. The Église Saint-Rédempteur closed in 1988. It was demolished in 1990 with the city’s approval.

But this wasn’t the end. A new, smaller modern church rose in its place. It was more functional. The municipality partially funded it. The diocesan association oversaw the project. Architects Philippe Escudié and Jean-François Fermaut designed it. Built in 1993-1994, the new Église Saint-Rédempteur is circular. It holds 130 people. A small campanile marks its presence. Meeting rooms were added.

The Église Saint-Rédempteur now serves a modest community. It is surrounded by brick houses and public housing. It is no longer a parish church. It is a satellite of the new Fraternité parish. The Schyven organ with its Renaissance case vanished during demolition. It had been restored in 1949.

The Église Saint-Rédempteur stands as a symbol. It represents adaptation. It reflects a community’s evolving needs. It is a place of worship and a testament to architectural change. This church embodies both loss and renewal. It has emerged as a beacon of hope.
