They rebuilt the church around 1424 and again from 1683 to 1689, transforming it into the baroque masterpiece we see today. The church’s facade, however, wasn’t completed until 1895. Inside Église Saint-Martin Saint-Augustin, the baroque nave and chapels are adorned with art and history. The Chapelle Saint Antoine de Padoue holds an 18th-century sculpted group depicting the Virgin Mary’s apparition to Saint Anthony. A cannonball, possibly from the 1543 siege, is embedded in a pillar near the convent gallery. The Chapelle Saint Nicolas de Tolentino honors a saint invoked for healing and protection against lightning. The Chapelle Saint Joseph houses the touching scene of Saint Joseph’s death. The high altar, a gift from the Saint-Sacrament brotherhood, dates back to 1751. In the Chapelle du Sacré-Cœur de Jésus, a marble plaque from 1444 testifies to the presence of the tailors and dressmakers guild. The Chapelle de la Madone à la Ceinture houses a devotion rare in the Christian world, with legends linking the Virgin Mary’s belt to both Saint Thomas and Saint Augustine’s mother, Saint Monica. Finally, the Chapelle Saint Jean-Baptiste holds a special significance. Here, in 1807, a young Giuseppe Garibaldi was baptized, an event that foreshadowed his future role in Italian history.
