Tucked away in Mons-en-Barœul stands the Église Saint-Jean Bosco. This church embodies a story of faith, community and architectural vision. It represents a physical manifestation of spiritual aspiration.

The story of Église Saint-Jean Bosco begins in 1954. Mons-en-Barœul experienced rapid expansion and a new parish was created. The existing chapel proved too small. Abbé Sion advocated for a larger church. Jean Willerval, a Parisian architect, was entrusted with the project.

Willerval conceived Église Saint-Jean Bosco as a “tent of the Lord in the desert”. This vision shaped the church’s unique design. Inaugurated on March 22, 1964, by Cardinal Lienart, the Église Saint-Jean Bosco immediately became a local landmark.

Jean Willerval was born in Tourcoing in 1924. His career took off in 1957. He won competitions for prefabricated gymnasiums and the Lille courthouse. This led him to establish an architectural firm in Lille.

Willerval’s local ties led to numerous projects in the Nord department. Église Saint-Pierre in Wattrelos and Église Saint-Thomas in Tourcoing are among his creations. He also contributed to the A1 highway and several nuclear power plants. Willerval’s talent earned him prestigious awards. He was named Chevalier des Arts et Lettres and Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur.

The architectural concept of Église Saint-Jean Bosco centers on the tent of the Lord. The church’s bell tower symbolizes the tent’s mast. Long, sloping roof panels represent the stretched canvas. The polygonal building utilizes brick construction. Slate-colored Eternit covers the roof. The church can accommodate 250 people. It includes a sanctuary and catechism rooms.

Inside Église Saint-Jean Bosco, exposed brick walls create a rustic feel. Varnished wood adorns the ceiling. Cement flooring covers the ground. The altar sits at the foot of the bell tower. Benches are arranged in a semicircle around the altar. The floor slopes towards the choir. Luc Six-Sicot designed the liturgical furniture. Philippe Scrive created the stained-glass wall behind the altar.

Saint John Bosco, the church’s namesake, was born in Italy in 1815. He dedicated his life to serving God and helping vulnerable youth. In 1859, he founded the Salesians of Don Bosco. This society focused on education and vocational training. Bosco emphasized kindness and patience. He believed in reason, religion, and love.

Saint John Bosco established schools and orphanages. He offered practical skills and moral guidance to countless young people. He reportedly had prophetic dreams. Some say he performed miracles, including healing the sick.

Saint John Bosco died in 1888 and was canonized in 1934. He is the patron saint of youth, apprentices, and educators. His legacy inspires people to work for the betterment of young people worldwide.

Église Saint-Jean Bosco stands as a testament to architectural innovation and spiritual dedication. It serves as a focal point for the community. It also stands as a reminder of Saint John Bosco’s enduring legacy. His dedication to youth and the values he championed continue to resonate within these walls.
