Didn’t the inhabitants of Belleville need a chapel back in 1543? They got one. But let’s talk about the imposing edifice before us. This is the Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste de Belleville. It stands as one of Paris’s first churches built in the Neo-Gothic style.
Completed in 1859, the Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste de Belleville arose during a period of significant population growth in the district. The church wasn’t just a building. It was a response to a community’s spiritual needs.
Jean-Baptiste Antoine Lassus was the architect. He was a pioneer of the Neo-Gothic style in France. Sadly, it became his last project. His disciple Truchy completed the work. Lassus’s vision shaped every aspect of the Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste de Belleville. He determined its structure. He set the iconographic program. Lassus even designed the church furniture.
Look closely at the sculpted decorations. These are the work of Aimé-Napoléon Perrey. The stunning windows were crafted by Auguste de Martel. He used designs by Louis Steinheil. Pierre François Marie Boulanger forged the hinges of the gate and side doors.
Eugène Viollet-le-Duc praised Lassus’s work. He noted the architect’s erudition and taste. He even saw an original character in this study of 13th-century architecture.
The church measures 68 meters long and 25 meters wide. The facade reaches 26 meters high. Each spire soars to 57 meters. Inside, the large nave has a vault height of 19 meters. The side aisles stand at 8 meters.
Inside the Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste de Belleville are five bays. They feature two aisles and eight side chapels. There is a transept and a choir. The choir extends from the nave. An ambulatory gives access to seven chapels. Two sacristies and two bell towers complete the structure.
In 2008, the choir was renovated. A baptistery was added under the direction of architect François Lacoste. Henri Guérin created the altar front and tabernacle door.
The Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste de Belleville has a magnificent organ. Aristide Cavaillé-Coll built it in 1863. Over the years, Michel-Merklin-Kuhn and Gonzalez have restored it. It has two keyboards and 23 stops.
The facade is dedicated to Saint John the Baptist. He is the church’s patron saint. The central portal depicts key moments in John’s life. These include the Annunciation to Zacharias and John baptizing Jesus.
The stained-glass windows tell biblical stories. They include scenes from the Old Testament. They show Eve’s creation. They also depict Noah’s Ark and the Tower of Babel.
Take a moment to appreciate the harmonious lighting. In 2015, the city updated the electrical system. New lighting was installed. The company LUMIN’ERE carried out the work. The result enhances the architecture. It aligns with Lassus’s original vision.
The Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste de Belleville is more than just a building. It’s a testament to faith. It reflects artistic vision. It embodies community spirit. It is a treasure in the heart of Belleville.
