“Anyone seeking refuge?” echoes through the walls of the Church of St. John the Baptist at the Beguinage. This Catholic parish church stands in central Brussels. It is dedicated to Saint John the Baptist. The Church of St. John the Baptist at the Beguinage has provided solace for centuries.

Let’s delve into the history of this remarkable place. The original Gothic church was built in the late 13th century. It was part of the Notre-Dame de la Vigne beguinage. Calvinists partially destroyed it in 1584. The church was rebuilt in the 17th century. Lucas Faydherbe is credited with the reconstruction. The Church of St. John the Baptist at the Beguinage is a prime example of Italian-influenced Brabantine Baroque style.

Imagine this area centuries ago. The Beguinage de Notre-Dame de la Vigne was founded before 1247. It was a miniature village with individual dwellings. A mill, laundry, and gardens were enclosed within a wall. The beguines were lay women living a communal life. They were not bound by vows. By the end of the 13th century their community grew. It had 1200 beguines. They built a larger Gothic church where the present building stands.

The beguines weaved wool and made lace. The Rue du Beguinage formed the main axis of this domain. The area between Rue de Laeken and Quai au Bois à Brûler was the Beguinage Quarter. The beguines were dispersed in 1797 during the French regime. The grounds were divided. Streets were laid out. The infirmary became the Grand Hospice Pachéco. The last houses of the beguinage disappeared in 1856.

The church was designated a historic monument in 1936. In 1998, the church was occupied by political refugee candidates. They awaited regularization. This followed the expulsion and death of Semira Adamu.

The previous Gothic church had three naves and a transept. Calvinists destroyed it in 1584. The beguines rebuilt their church in Baroque style. Construction began in 1657. Its façade is considered one of the most beautiful in Belgium. A fire ravaged the roof in November 2000. The church was then restored.

The Church of St. John the Baptist at the Beguinage is pretty much a museum. It is dedicated to Theodoor van Loon. In 1622, he painted the Assumption of Mary for the high altar. It featured three prominent female saints. This work is now in the Royal Museum of Fine Arts of Belgium. Five more of his paintings are on display here. Saint Ursula Crowned by the Child Jesus is one example. Salome with the Head of John the Baptist was stolen in 1973.

Van Loon painted Saint Ursula Crowned by the Child Jesus in 1626. Mary is enthroned among female saints. Jesus extends a laurel wreath to Saint Ursula. This female group perfectly suits a Beguinage church.

Today the Church of St. John the Baptist at the Beguinage continues its legacy. It is home to the House of Compassion. This organization continues providing refuge. They also organize exhibitions. The atmosphere remains serene despite the nearby fish market. As you leave take a moment to reflect on the stories held within these walls. Consider the countless acts of compassion witnessed here. The Church of St. John the Baptist at the Beguinage stands as a testament to faith resilience and the enduring spirit of community.
