Built in the early 1960s the Église Saint-Jean-Bosco in Mons-en-Baroeul near Lille stands as a testament to a specific era. This isn’t your typical ancient cathedral. The Église Saint-Jean-Bosco is a modern church reflecting the architectural styles of the mid-20th century. It’s a fascinating example of post-war church construction.

The story of the Église Saint-Jean-Bosco begins with a growing community. In the 1960s Mons-en-Baroeul was expanding. A new church was needed. The Diocese of Lille commissioned Parisian architect Jean Willerval. He was a member of the Atelier d’Art et d’Architecture a prestigious group of architects. Willerval designed not just churches but also other structures including Lille’s courthouse.

Willerval’s design for the Église Saint-Jean-Bosco is unique. He drew inspiration from the biblical Tent of the Lord. The church’s bell tower represents the tent’s central pole. The long sloping roof suggests a stretched canvas. The building is polygonal made of brick with a slate-colored Eternit roof. It seats 250 people including space for religious education.

Inside the Église Saint-Jean-Bosco the walls are exposed brick. The ceiling is varnished wood. The floor is cement. The altar sits at the foot of the bell tower. The pews are arranged in a semicircle around it. The floor slopes gently towards the choir. The liturgical furnishings were designed by Luc Six-Sicot. A striking stained-glass wall behind the altar was created by Philippe Scrive.

The Église Saint-Jean-Bosco isn’t just a building. It’s a place of worship. It’s a community center. It’s a living piece of architectural and religious history. It reflects the dynamism of post-war France. The combination of modern materials and the symbolic reference to the Tent of the Lord makes it a truly special place.

This church is more than just bricks and mortar. It is a place of faith and community. A place where people gather to celebrate life’s milestones and offer solace in times of sorrow. The Église Saint-Jean-Bosco continues to serve its purpose. It’s a reminder that even modern buildings can be steeped in meaning and symbolism. A visit here offers a glimpse into the architectural and spiritual landscape of mid-20th century France. The Église Saint-Jean-Bosco is a fascinating example of how faith and architectural innovation can coexist.
