Hidden within Lambersart a peaceful village near Lille stands the Église Saint-Gérard. This unassuming church holds a captivating history. It’s a story of community faith and resilience.
The Église Saint-Gérard isn’t just a building. It’s a testament to the unwavering spirit of Lambersart’s residents. Construction began sometime between 1900 and 1910. Simple parishioners funded its creation through donations and hard work. Their collective efforts shaped the church’s neo-Gothic brick architecture. The tall facade features a striking bell tower flanked by hexagonal turrets. A high spire covered in slate completes the impressive structure.
Above the church’s main entrance a sculpted triangular tympanum depicts Saint Gérard. Two angels flank him in bas-relief. A cross crowns the tympanum. The inscription “St Gérard protégez-nous” meaning “Saint Gérard protect us” is visible on the lintel. This small detail speaks volumes about the deep faith of those who built and worshipped within these walls. The Église Saint-Gérard’s original stained-glass windows survive. They portray scenes from the lives of saints and Jesus. Two frescoes depicting Saint Bernadette further enrich the interior.
Sadly the Église Saint-Gérard fell silent. Declining religious practice and dwindling resources led to its closure. The diocese of Lille ultimately desacralized the church in 2014. The church’s furniture and liturgical objects were sold. Some items were donated to impoverished parishes in Africa.
In 2017 the diocese sold the Église Saint-Gérard for a symbolic one euro. The buyer a real estate company plans to transform it into a center for craft apprenticeships. This ensures the building’s preservation. The bell tower a cherished landmark remains. Its bells continue to chime the hours. This project represents a remarkable transition. A sacred space is being repurposed. It will offer a new purpose to the community of Lambersart. The Église Saint-Gérard’s story isn’t over. It continues to evolve reflecting the changing needs of the community while honouring its rich past. The church stands as a symbol of faith and community both past and present.
