This magnificent church isn’t just a beautiful building. It’s a living testament to the enduring spirit of Geneva. Dedicated to the 17th-century French Saint François de Sales it stands proudly in Carouge. It’s a beacon of neo-Romanesque architecture.
The story of the Église Saint-François de Sales began not here. Its origins lie in a smaller chapel on Rue Prévost-Martin. Built in 1870 under Bishop Gaspard Mermillod it quickly outgrew its humble beginnings. The burgeoning congregation needed more space. So in 1905 the parish moved to its current location on Rue des Voisins.
Initially the Dominicans of Fribourg oversaw the church. However in 1985 the Brothers of Saint John took over its pastoral care. The church has faced challenges. In 2008 unfortunate circumstances led to a significant reshuffle of the pastoral team. Yet the Église Saint-François de Sales persevered. It remains a cornerstone of the community.
Architect Edouard Chevallaz designed the church. Construction took place between 1902 and 1904. The façade is stunning. Intricate stonework surrounds a beautiful rose window. The bell tower a majestic addition was restored in 2019.
Inside the church underwent a complete refurbishment. This took place between 1959 and 1963 under Georges Lacôte. He was a former cantonal architect. The restoration preserved the church’s historical charm. It also made it a vibrant welcoming space.
The Église Saint-François de Sales is more than just a place of worship. It’s a hub of community activity. It offers catechism classes. It provides educational support in partnership with the Geneva Association of Park Children. In 2022 it marked the 400th anniversary of Saint François de Sales’ death. A solemn Ascension Mass was broadcast on RTS Un and Eurovision.
Officially listed as a heritage site on April 29 1996 the Église Saint-François de Sales is a treasure. Its heritage status highlights its importance. It ensures its preservation for generations to come. The choir organ a soulful accompaniment to services remains. The main organ was sadly dismantled during the 2018 renovation.
Located near the University Hospitals of Geneva it sits in the Plainpalais neighborhood. This vibrant multicultural area adds to the church’s rich tapestry.
