Built in 1894 the Église Saint-François-d’Assise stands before you. Its neo-Gothic architecture is a testament to the rich history of Mouvaux. Initially planned as Saint Antoine de Padoue the church was renamed after the death of its benefactor François Masurel. The Archbishop of Cambrai approved the change to Saint François d’Assise a fitting tribute.

The church’s construction took just a year. It was completed in 1895 a remarkably short time for a structure of this size and complexity. Can you imagine the flurry of activity the sounds of hammers chiseling stone the shouts of workers coordinating their efforts?

This wasn’t the first church in Mouvaux. Evidence suggests a church existed here as far back as the 12th century. The current building stands upon the foundations of its predecessor a silent witness to centuries of faith and devotion.

Inside the Église Saint-François-d’Assise a remarkable feature awaits you. A statue of Christ extends his arm towards a statue of Saint Francis himself. A unique detail and a testament to the craftsmanship of the era. This gift came from the employees of the Établissements François Masurel a lasting symbol of their devotion.

The church’s interior is illuminated by large stained-glass windows. They bathe the space in natural light transforming it into a haven of serenity and spiritual reflection. Note the master altar a work of art created by the Belgian sculptor Jules Desmarets. His talent shines in every detail.

This place has seen generations come and go. Each stone holds untold stories of prayers answered hopes whispered and lives lived. Take a moment to breathe in the atmosphere. Feel the weight of history the echoes of countless services.

The Église Saint-François-d’Assise is more than just a building. It is a living testament to faith community and the enduring spirit of Mouvaux. It is a place of peace and reflection. It has quietly watched over the town for over a century. This quiet sentinel has witnessed the passage of time. It continues to offer solace and spiritual nourishment to all who enter its doors.
