Gazing at the Église Saint-Charles-de-Lachenaie, can you hear the whispers of the past? This isn’t the original church that graced this land. The first Église Saint-Charles-de-Lachenaie opened its doors in 1730. A modest structure, it eventually succumbed to the ravages of time. The bishop of Montreal urged the parishioners to build a new church. But the Lachenois took their time. Finally, in 1888, construction began on a grand new Église Saint-Charles-de-Lachenaie. It was consecrated in 1890. A true architectural gem, it showcased the talents of architects Mesnard and Perrault. Its interior was breathtaking. A gilded wooden altar, crafted by Gilles Bolvin in 1744, commanded attention. A sculpted Way of the Cross, salvaged from the 18th-century church, added to the sacred ambiance. The construction cost a hefty $36,000. Sadly, this magnificent structure met a tragic end. On June 1, 1964, fire engulfed the Église Saint-Charles-de-Lachenaie. The blaze, possibly caused by an electrical fault, spread rapidly. The church’s bell tower crashed down, intensifying the inferno. Firefighters from Lachenaie, Terrebonne, and Pointe-aux-Trembles battled the flames. They managed to save the nearby presbytery and school, but the church was lost. Only the stone walls remained. The estimated loss exceeded $500,000. Priceless artifacts, including the altar and Way of the Cross, vanished in smoke. The current Église Saint-Charles-de-Lachenaie, built in 1966, stands as a testament to the community’s resilience. Designed by André Ritchot with artistic contributions from Marcel Bourgoin, this contemporary structure features a unique hipped roof and a detached bell tower. Its fieldstone cladding and distinctive bell tower echo the architectural heritage of the past. The Église Saint-Charles-de-Lachenaie serves not just as a place of worship, but as a symbol of continuity and rebirth, a reminder that even from ashes, beauty can rise again.
