“Imagine the year 1924” The Église Saint-Ambroise wasn’t yet the majestic structure we see today. It was just a dream a plan taking shape in the mind of architect Ernest Cormier. This church in Montreal’s Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie borough stands as a testament to his vision.

Cormier drew inspiration from the pre-Roman architecture of Northern Italy. Notice the simplicity of the design. See how the layout echoes the styles of that era? The bell tower a striking resemblance to St Mark’s Campanile in Venice completes the ensemble.

Construction began in July 1924. It was one of Cormier’s first major projects. The Église Saint-Ambroise alongside its presbytery and École Anthelme-Verreau formed an architectural ensemble. Jean-Omer Marchand designed the nearby École Saint-Ambroise.

The cornerstone was blessed on May 10 1925. The first Christmas Mass was celebrated just months later. The church’s brown brick facade and walls tell a silent story of dedication and craftsmanship.

Look closely at the tympanum above the entrance. There you’ll find a depiction of Saint Ambrose. He is dressed as a bishop. He holds both a pastoral staff and a pen. An angel whispers inspiration into his ear. This reflects Saint Ambrose’s renowned skill as a writer and theologian. He was a pivotal figure in the fight against Arianism. It was even Saint Ambrose who guided Augustine of Hippo to Christianity.

The Église Saint-Ambroise is more than just a building. It’s a living link to Montreal’s history and faith. It’s a place where generations have gathered for worship. It stands as a symbol of enduring devotion and architectural elegance. It’s a place of peace a beacon of hope in the heart of the city.
