Built in 1949-1950 Église Saint-Albert-le-Grand stands proudly. It’s a testament to the faith of a community. A community that thrived in the area now known as Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie. The church’s history is deeply intertwined with the evolution of Montreal. Specifically the neighbourhoods of Hochelaga and Maisonneuve.

Imagine the bustling streets of Hochelaga in 1883. That year Hochelaga became a city. It was then annexed to Montreal. Maisonneuve a city in 1912 joined Montreal in 1918. The construction of Église Saint-Albert-le-Grand marked a new chapter. A chapter of spiritual growth in a rapidly changing urban landscape.

The church wasn’t just a building. It became the heart of the parish. It witnessed baptisms marriages and funerals. It hosted countless masses. Daily masses at 7:30 am. Sunday masses at 8:30 am and 11:00 am. Even special university masses took place. Sadly though the parish closed its doors in 2011. Its territory was attached to Saint-Esprit-de-Rosemont.

But the story doesn’t end there. Église Saint-Albert-le-Grand is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a place of remarkable stories. Stories of faith perseverance and community spirit. It’s a story of a Christian community. A community established in the midst of the Second Vatican Council and the Quiet Revolution. This community creatively responded to the changing Church and society.

This community known as the Christian Community of Saint-Albert-le-Grand (CCSA). It celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2021. A testament to its enduring spirit. The CCSA was closely linked to the Saint-Albert-le-Grand convent. A convent built for Dominicans between 1957 and 1960. The early masses were in Latin. The community evolved. They started to include lay people. They switched to French.

They developed a liturgy that embraced the participation of lay people. Lay people read the Gospel. They delivered sermons. Students helped decorate. Others played music. The community fostered growth. It created different groups and services for adults. They offered catechism classes. They even had meetings during Lent and Advent.

The CCSA showed remarkable resilience. They overcame challenges and internal tensions. They adapted their approach. They embraced new technologies. They reached out to the community. They supported refugees. They participated in social justice initiatives. The Christian Community of Saint-Albert-le-Grand continues to thrive. They do so through innovative liturgies activities and new initiatives.

The Église Saint-Albert-le-Grand may be closed as a parish. Its spirit lives on. It continues to serve as a reminder of the power of faith community and enduring legacy. It is a lasting impact on the cultural fabric of Montreal. A legacy reflected in the lives touched by its story.
