Nestled in the heart of Cannes, the Église Protestante Unie de la Transfiguration stands as a quiet testament to a vibrant history. The Église Protestante Unie de la Transfiguration isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a symbol of resilience, a beacon of community, and a testament to the enduring spirit of faith. The Église Protestante Unie de la Transfiguration, also known as the Church of the Transfiguration, has a fascinating past. Originally built in 1866, the church served a German-speaking Protestant community. The church was designed by the Russian architect André Lavezzari, giving it a distinct Greek style. It could accommodate 300 worshippers and much of its original furnishings came from the old Anglican church.

The church’s early years were marked by growth and challenges. The community thrived with an influx of German merchants and artists. The Prussian King Wilhelm I and even Napoleon III contributed to its construction. However, the outbreak of World War I brought hardship. The church and the adjoining parsonage were seized, considered enemy property. The pastor, Philipp Friedrich Mader, sought refuge in Italy, where he passed away in 1917. The congregation, scattered by war, dissolved.

The Église Protestante Unie de la Transfiguration was eventually reclaimed. After the war’s end, the Evangelical Lutheran Church of France took ownership. It was then renamed Église de la Transfiguration, reflecting its renewed purpose. Under Pastor Frank Wheatcroft, from 1919 to 1927, a new community emerged, speaking French and English. German services resumed in the 1950s, led by Pastor Rosenstiel, and Germans regained representation within the church leadership.

Today, the Église Protestante Unie de la Transfiguration continues to serve a diverse congregation. Since 2018, the German Protestant Church of Nice, founded in 2011, holds services within its historic walls. It also hosts congregations from Madagascar and Finland, a testament to its inclusive spirit. The Église Protestante Unie de la Transfiguration stands as a poignant reminder of the power of faith to transcend borders and endure through trials. Its story, woven with threads of resilience, community, and transformation, continues to unfold in the heart of Cannes.
