A majestic facade greets you. This is the Église Notre-Dame-des-Anges in Tourcoing. Its beauty is undeniable. It stands tall a testament to faith and craftsmanship.

The Église Notre-Dame-des-Anges isn’t just a building. It’s a story etched in stone and brick. Construction began in 1845. Architects Achille Dewarlez and Charles Maillard brought it to life. The land belonged to Angélique Destombes-Masurel. She was a member of a prominent textile family. Her contribution ensured the church’s existence.

The church’s dimensions are impressive. It’s 33 meters wide and 64 meters long. Imagine the dedication and effort involved. The neoclassical style dominates. Yet Renaissance influences peek through. This was common in the mid-19th century. The facade is mostly limestone. The base is a sturdy sandstone.

The bell tower is a striking feature. It rises above the main entrance. The square tower is set back. This creates a sense of depth and grandeur. The entrance is sheltered by a barrel vault. Two Doric columns support it. Above the entrance a second level resembles a blind tetrastyle portico. Ionic columns frame a rose window actually an oculus with wooden inserts. Niches with intricately carved sculptures hold statues.

The bell tower itself is interesting. The lower section shows brick at its base. Above the brick the stone continues. The polygonal spire soars above. Charles Maillard designed it in 1859. He added the spire after taking over from Dewarlez in 1850. The spire’s arched openings decrease in size as they ascend. The first openings rest on paired Corinthian columns.

The side facades are simpler. They only reach the first level. Each has a single arched bay with a lintel on consoles. Pilasters seem to support an entablature. This entablature is reduced to a straight cavetto and a fillet. The cornice is equally subdued.

The interior’s neo-Renaissance style is captivating. It was decorated between 1857 and 1875. Charles Maillard oversaw this magnificent interior work. A false ribbed vault covers the nave. Traditional composition is visible. Arcades topped by a triforium then high windows are present. But Renaissance vocabulary replaces the Gothic style. The arcades are round arches on columns. Corinthian pilasters seem to support an entablature. Seventy polychrome statues fill niches above the pillars.

The Église Notre-Dame-des-Anges is more than a church. It’s a living history. It is a testament to architectural styles. It showcases intricate craftsmanship. It serves as a space for worship and community. It embodies the spirit of Tourcoing. It continues to inspire awe and wonder in all who visit. Take your time to appreciate the details. Soak in the atmosphere. The Église Notre-Dame-des-Anges has a story to tell. A story of faith community and enduring beauty.
