Can a church whisper secrets of architectural innovation? Here at the Église Notre-Dame de la Nativité, it certainly seems so. This understated masterpiece in Villeneuve-d’Ascq speaks volumes about the revival of sacred art that shaped architectural design in the 1950s and 60s. The Église Notre-Dame de la Nativité, completed in 1963, is a testament to the vision of architects Maurice Salembier and Ludwig Peretz. Both were members of the Atelier d’Art et d’Architecture (AAA), which worked for the diocese of Lille. The Église Notre-Dame de la Nativité beautifully blends modern design with local architectural characteristics. This creates a deep connection with its surroundings. The church showcases a harmonious marriage of local brick and concrete. This not only demonstrates technical prowess but also incorporates remarkable artistic and aesthetic elements. Inside, the floor gently slopes towards the altar, a subtle yet powerful design choice by Salembier. The church underwent renovations in 2008, also led by Salembier. The choir was completely redesigned, the baptistery elevated, and parish halls were renovated. A new welcome hall was also created and the lighting and paint were reimagined. Sadly, Salembier passed away the same year. The proportions, relationships between elements, and materials used in the Église Notre-Dame de la Nativité clearly reflect the influence of Le Corbusier. The contemporary stained glass windows by Claude Blanchet illuminate the choir and the reception area. In the nave, a strip of glass windows along the top provides natural light, creating a serene ambiance. This church is more than just a building. It’s a story etched in brick and concrete, a blend of modern and traditional, and a tribute to the architects who brought it to life.
