The parish of the \u00c9glise Nativit\u00e9-de-la-Sainte-Vierge-d’Hochelaga was established in 1867. However, the first church building wasn’t opened until 1877. Disaster struck in 1921 when a fire destroyed it. Father Georges-Marie LePailleur acted swiftly. He rebuilt the parish church on the same site that very year. He even managed to salvage the facade and bell tower.
Look up at that bell tower. It dates back to 1906. The tower soars over 80 meters high. It houses five bells. The heaviest weighs about 2500 kg. Imagine the sound they must make.
Father LePailleur held a grand vision. He wanted to create an independent bishopric in eastern Montreal. He hired Dalb\u00e9 Viau and Alphonse Venne. These Montreal artists were renowned for their statuary. They created the stone and marble high altar. They also made the side altars and choir balustrade. The Stations of the Cross are made from Caen stone coated with plaster. Above the frieze are statues of the Twelve Apostles.
The most stunning feature is the monumental frieze. It depicts the Apotheosis of the Virgin Mary. Carli and Petrucci installed it in 1927. The frieze presents 27 paintings. These paintings illustrate the life of the Virgin Mary. They also show religious institutions, bishops of Montreal, and the city’s founders. The frieze includes 320 life-size figures. They are made of plaster or marble dust mixed with adhesive. Its dimensions are impressive. It is 2.14 meters high.
