Hidden in plain sight, the Église du Gesù whispers tales of ambition and artistry. Did Bishop Ignace Bourget ever imagine his dream, a church mirroring the grandeur of Rome, would become a Montreal landmark? The Église du Gesù stands as a testament to his vision, a Baroque Revival masterpiece completed in 1865. This church is more than just a beautiful building. It’s a living piece of history. It’s a bridge between the old world and the new. The church echoes the design of its namesake in Rome, the final resting place of Ignatius of Loyola, founder of the Jesuit order. Irish-American architect Patrick Keely captured the essence of the Roman Baroque style. He designed a grand structure, covering approximately 4,400 square meters, with a vault soaring 22.9 meters high. This makes the Église du Gesù the only entirely Baroque-style church in Montreal. Look closely at the facade. Notice the bases for two bell towers that were never completed due to financial constraints. Much of the funding intended for the towers was diverted to support the adjacent Collège Sainte-Marie. This Jesuit-run college, sadly demolished in 1975, once stood as a companion to the church. Inside, the vault’s five arches boast a breathtaking display. Frescoes by American painter Daniel Muller adorn the arches, replicating works from the Dusseldorf school and depicting scenes from the life of Jesus. A statue of Notre-Dame-de-Liesse, brought from France in 1877, holds the ashes of its predecessor, destroyed during the French Revolution. The Église du Gesù’s basement also hides a secret. Converted into an auditorium, it’s one of Montreal’s oldest cultural centers. This space has hosted both local and international performers, including the Compagnons de Saint-Laurent and the Théâtre du Nouveau Monde. The Église du Gesù has served as more than a place of worship. It is a stage for artistic expression and a gathering place for the community. As you leave the Église du Gesù, remember the ambition of Bishop Bourget and the artistry of Patrick Keely. Remember the vibrant cultural life it fostered. It’s a story etched in stone and paint. It’s a story waiting to be rediscovered with every visit.
