The Église des Saints-Anges-Gardiens didn’t spring up overnight. Its history stretches back to 1676. That’s when the parish was founded. It’s one of Montreal Island’s oldest parishes. The first chapel was simple a wooden structure. Imagine its humble beginnings within Lachine’s fort. That first chapel stood where LaSalle now sits. A replica stands before the current church a poignant reminder.
This isn’t the first church on this spot. Far from it. Fire destroyed its predecessor in 1915. Only the presbytery and a small chapel survived. The current Église des Saints-Anges-Gardiens? Its construction began in 1919. It was completed a year later. Architects Dalbé Viau and Alphonse Venne designed it. They also designed the Oratoire Saint-Joseph. Their neo-Romanesque style is breathtaking. The interior is a traditional Latin cross design.
The Église des Saints-Anges-Gardiens boasts more than just impressive architecture. Ozias Leduc a celebrated painter decorated its interior. He painted 34 murals. These adorn the nave transept choir and organ loft. His work wasn’t done alone. Paul-Émile Borduas a future art icon was one of his apprentices.
Notice the impressive statue of Saint Michael the Archangel. It’s on the facade. Sculptor Louis Jobin created it. It’s wood covered in copper. This church has remarkable artistry everywhere.
In 1920 the Casavant Frères organ was blessed. Auguste Descarries a son of a former mayor played a concert. Five bells from France were added to the left tower later. They were blessed in 1921. Interestingly the bells from the burned church were melted down. They became part of a Sacré-Cœur monument. You can see it on Père-Marquette Promenade near 15th Avenue.
