The current Église des Pères Carmes Paters Karmelietenkerk is a stunning example of Lombard Neo-Gothic architecture. Its construction spanned from 1861 to 1875. Architects Menge Appelmans and Cuypens collaborated on this masterpiece. The exterior is a triptych of brickwork. Ocher facades are adorned with pinnacles and statues. Our Lady of Mount Carmel stands proudly at the top. Below her Saint Teresa of Ávila and Saint Joseph watch over the city. Their 19th-century statues hold secrets. Saint Joseph is crowned a mark of local devotion. Saint Teresa wears a Doctor of the Church hat. This was long before the title’s official recognition. She’s depicted with a book and a flaming arrow. This symbolizes the divine fire that inspired her work.

Columns with leafy capitals support pointed arches. The stained-glass windows in the central part are breathtaking. They depict the Virgin and Child the Virgin of Carmel and key figures from the Carmelite Order. In the evening spotlights illuminate a gorgeous 17th-century crucifix. The long Eucharist table is a testament to post-Vatican II liturgical reforms.
