The devotion to the Child Jesus a truly miraculous story. This devotion began in Prague in the 17th century. It spread to Belgium at the end of the 19th century. We stand before the Église des Pères Barnabites Paters Barnabietenkerk a testament to that faith.

This beautiful church is more than just a building. It’s a sanctuary a place of pilgrimage dedicated to the Child Jesus of Prague. The Barnabite Fathers built it. They arrived in Brussels at the turn of the 20th century. They embraced this growing devotion. They made the Église des Pères Barnabites its center.

The story begins long before the church’s construction. A woman named Gabrielle Fontaine played a key role. In 1892 she published a booklet about the miraculous Child Jesus of Prague. She also founded a magazine in 1895. It spread the devotion across Belgium. Requests for prayers and blessings poured in. A public place of worship became essential.

First a small oratory opened in a private home. Then a temporary chapel was blessed on the site of the future church. Pilgrims flocked from all over Belgium. The small chapel quickly proved inadequate.

In 1905 the Barnabites commissioned the architect Léopold Pepermans. He designed the stunning Neo-Gothic structure we see today. The cornerstone was laid soon after. Construction progressed rapidly. The Église des Pères Barnabites was consecrated in 1906.

The Église des Pères Barnabites’s Neo-Gothic facade is striking. It features a large stained-glass window. Two asymmetrical decorative turrets flank the facade. The main portal is adorned with a relief of the crowned Child Jesus.

Inside the church’s beauty continues. The nave boasts five bays. Two aisles accompany it. The church extends into a two-bay choir. A triforium runs along the nave and choir. The confessionals are in the Art Deco style a unique blend of styles. The triumphal arches feature statues of Saint Paul patron saint of the Barnabites and Antoine-Marie Zaccaria the order’s founder.

The Child Jesus altar is located at the end of the right aisle. The walls are covered in ex-votos mostly from the early 20th century. These are tangible expressions of faith and gratitude. They offer a glimpse into the lives of those who sought solace and healing within the Église des Pères Barnabites.
