“Imagine,” they said, “a grander church is needed.” That’s what the parishioners of Haut-Pont declared back in 1825. They stand before the Église de l’Immaculée Conception today. But their initial pleas for a new and larger church took a while to come to fruition.

This Église de l’Immaculée Conception replaced a modest chapel. That earlier chapel was called Sainte-Elisabeth. It dated back to the early 17th century.

The construction of this Église de l’Immaculée Conception didn’t begin until a generation later. Charles Leroy, an architect from Lille, provided the plans. The Loriaux company from Saint-Omer carried out the work. The first stone was laid on October 4, 1854.

Even when the Église de l’Immaculée Conception was inaugurated on October 8, 1859, it wasn’t fully complete. A temporary wooden bell tower was added in 1865. The bells themselves date from 1866 and 1868. The interior decoration wasn’t finished until 1872 with painting and 1879 with furniture.

By 1887, the Église de l’Immaculée Conception was already in poor condition. In 1917, a bombing caused further damage. Restoration work took place between 1921 and 1925. The current spire made of metal framework from local foundries was erected in 1935. This replaced the old wooden bell tower, which had fallen in 1929.

The Église de l’Immaculée Conception stands in the Faubourg du Haut-Pont district, north of the city center of St. Omer. The church’s layout includes a nave flanked by aisles. An apse with five sections extends from the nave.

The first bay of the Église de l’Immaculée Conception sits between a series of double buttresses. It forms a projecting structure. This section includes the narthex and the western side chapels, including the baptistery.

The nave and aisles have six bays of equal width. Except for the sixth bay that opens onto the choir and the eastern side chapels. The choir provides access to the sacristy on the south side and the oratory on the north side.

Extensive restoration work was carried out on the Église de l’Immaculée Conception. This addressed structural issues and damage. Degradation resulted from environmental conditions. Atmospheric conditions also contributed to the wear of time.

The work included repairing roofs and frames. It also included reinforcing masonry. The interiors of the Église de l’Immaculée Conception underwent complete restoration. Stained glass, vaulting, paintings, staff, and coatings were entirely restored. Colorimetric research highlighted the remarkable interior features. The reliefs were emphasized.

Interior and exterior lighting was positioned to work with the color choices. The interior decorations were enhanced. The project was completed in 2015. The town of Saint-Omer oversaw the project. The budget was 4,000,000 excluding taxes. The study was conducted in 2014.

The Église de l’Immaculée Conception has stood the test of time. It was born from a need. It has evolved through war and restoration. It is a testament to the enduring spirit of the community. Take a moment to appreciate the Église de l’Immaculée Conception. Its walls echo with stories of faith, resilience, and artistry.
