“Imagine being a missionary arriving in Geneva in 1850.” Your task is to spread the word of the restored gospel. This is the story of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints here. It begins with early efforts and leads to the establishment of a lasting presence.
In 1850, T. B. H. Stenhouse started teaching in French-speaking Switzerland right here in Geneva. He shared the message of the restored gospel. Four years later, the work expanded into German-speaking Switzerland. Early efforts faced challenges. Missionaries encountered mob violence and opposition. Clergy, the press, and civil authorities all posed obstacles. Despite this, many Swiss people embraced the new faith.
By the mid-20th century, the Church experienced unprecedented growth. Improved missionary work and methods contributed to this increase. A significant milestone was reached in 1955. The Swiss Temple was erected. It became the first temple in Europe. Another important event occurred in 1961. The Swiss Stake was organized. These developments marked a turning point. They helped change the perception of Mormonism in Switzerland.
Before the Bern Switzerland Temple was built, members had to travel long distances to other temples. The temple became a central point for members in Europe. The construction of the temple was announced in 1952. David O. McKay, the church president at the time, shared the news. The groundbreaking took place in 1953. The temple was dedicated in 1955. It became a symbol of the Church’s growth.
The Bern Switzerland Temple required presentations in multiple languages. A film was created to overcome this challenge. Gordon B. Hinckley supervised the film’s production. He was responsible for transporting it to Switzerland.
The temple closed for renovations in the early 1990s. The interior was completely renewed. Gordon B. Hinckley rededicated the temple in 1992. In 2005, a statue of the angel Moroni was added.
