Right here in the courtyard of the Spanish Embassy in Brussels, this artwork explores the delicate interplay between humanity and nature. Efecto Mariposa, meaning “Butterfly Effect,” takes its inspiration from chaos theory. The theory suggests that even small actions can have unforeseen consequences, like a butterfly’s wings causing a typhoon across the globe. The mural reflects on this theory within the context of our planet’s finite resources and the Anthropocene era. Human actions now significantly impact our environment. We see global warming, pollution, and resource depletion. The Efecto Mariposa Mural encourages us to consider our role in this delicate balance. The mural features three key elements: a tree, a human figure, and a butterfly. The tree symbolizes the cycle of life and stands as a cultural icon in human imagination. It represents constant change, its branches growing both physically and metaphorically. A human figure, head nestled within the tree trunk, represents our connection with the natural world.
