Tucked away in the bustling cityscape of New York City is the Edo Seaplane Base. It’s a hidden gem. Edo Seaplane Base has a unique story to tell. The Edo Seaplane Base isn’t just a place for planes to land and take off. It’s a portal to a bygone era. It started its operations way back in May 1948. Edo Seaplane Base has witnessed the changing tides of the city. The Edo Seaplane Base is privately owned and operated. It primarily supports EDO’s seaplane operations. The base manager, J.J. Frey, oversees the float operations. You can reach him at 718-445-6000. The Edo Seaplane Base isn’t your typical airport with paved runways. Instead, it boasts three waterways. One runs north-south, measuring 5000 feet by 500 feet. Another stretches northeast-southwest, spanning an impressive 10,000 feet by 500 feet. The third waterway runs northwest-southeast, also measuring 10,000 feet by 500 feet. All three waterways utilize water as their surface. They have no special surface treatment. For clearance delivery, pilots should contact New York Approach at 516-683-2849. Interestingly, the Edo Seaplane Base also provides minor airframe and powerplant repair services. While it doesn’t offer bottled or bulk oxygen, pilots can find 100LL and Jet A fuel available. Hangars and tiedowns are also available for parking. Edo Seaplane Base isn’t just a functional facility. It’s a piece of New York City’s aviation history.
