Born in Missouri in 1815, Edmund Calloway Darst answered the call of liberty. He arrived in Texas in September 1829, seeking a new life. Little did he know, destiny awaited him on the battlefields of San Jacinto. Right here, at the Edmund Calloway Darst Plaque, we commemorate his bravery and sacrifice. The Edmund Calloway Darst Plaque stands as a testament to a young man who gave his all for Texas independence. Darst fought valiantly in the Battle of San Jacinto on April 21, 1836. A pivotal moment in Texas history, this battle secured victory against Santa Anna’s forces. Darst served as a private in Captain William H. Patton’s Fourth Company. This company was part of the Second Regiment Texas Volunteers under Colonel Sidney Sherman’s command. Sadly, just two years after his heroic contribution at San Jacinto, Darst passed away in 1838 at Damon Mound. This area is now part of Fort Bend County. While his life was cut short, his legacy lives on. In a bureaucratic twist, his bounty and donation certificates, granting him land for his service, were mistakenly made out to “Edward Durst”. The Edmund Calloway Darst Plaque reminds us that even in the midst of errors, history remembers the truth. Darst, though unmarried, came from a large family. His heirs, Emory H., Patrick E., John G., and Richard Darst, eventually received his headright certificate. This certificate, issued in 1838, entitled them to a significant portion of land. Though his earthly remains rest in Damon Cemetery, his spirit remains here at the Edmund Calloway Darst Plaque. We honor his dedication to Texas and his role in shaping its future.
